If you're going onto 1.7.10, you can always make your own, as there's substantially less config tweaking required

Ooh. I just love posting this.

I like Running Red. It sends a message, which is something most packs fail to do. It's a quick play, and very fun. It's mechanics are different than all the modern packs, and it's a real nice change. At first, there is some grind, but Gideon does a good job of changing it up. If you make the trip to the island, making all the blocks, there's a large supply of blocks there for you to use. You spend the time making the lava the hard way, he provides an easier way to do it. Everything you do is rewarded with a better and faster way to do it.

And I cannot make enough of an emphasis on the story. Running Red makes such an effort on telling a story, it's something that is rivalled by nothing else in the MC community. It's jam-packed *wink wink* with symbolism, and even if you don't see it all (I didn't), it's an amazing experience. And meanwhile, you're treated to new and refreshing ways to do things with new and interesting mods that are rarely shown by the other available packs.

TL;DR, it's definitely worth the download, and deserves it's place as a listed pack.

The dw20 pack is probably closest to what you remember from 2 years ago. There have been lots of changes since.

Magic world 2 is a good starting platform as many of those mods have in game documentation that helps a lot. There is also a good blood magic getting started guide stickied in the mood discussion forum. Many of the magic mods are not gated behind diamonds, so you can get rather far in all of them without having a large supply.

I would suggest looking at the 3rd party pack section of the site and choose one that suits you. Sure its easier than it has ever been to create your own mod pack but its even easier to let someone else download them for you. Then you can add more. Personally I went with Mechanical Titan since it had most of the mods I was interested in. I removed a few, added some others.
