What just happened...

First, I'm playing on the Horizon's pack, with a few additional mods added. So while I was mining in my tunnels, I broke a block and all of the sudden, green gel like blocks started to fill the tunnel. I started backing up and away, then after about 15 blocks were spawned they blew up leaving a rather large hole and taking all my gear and items with it. Quite frustrating, especially when I have no clue why I died and lost everything - will be a little easier to swallow if I know what the heck happened.

Edit: I just looked up GasCraft, it seems that was it. Thanks. Still sucks, but now at least I know.

Yeah, you found a natural gas pocket. They don't explode unless they hit fire(or torches if on hard mode).
Shame it went boom; that stuff is super useful.

Yea, playing on hard mode so it went boom on the torches. Now I know to not just tentatively back up, but to high-tail it out of there when I see it next time.

Or use light sources other then lava, open flame, and normal torches. It's too damn useful in my books to let any go to waste.

luminators from Powersuits might be a good choice, or the torch spell from Ars Magica (though there's no Ars Magica in Monster)

Or blood lamps from Blood Magic, TC4 lighting, Glowstone stuff in vanilla... It's a bit harder to use, yes, but it helps cut down on wasted natural gas(and explosions).
