I've seen these weird towers pretty often, but never seen a point to them. There have never been mobs or a chest inside. They are made of End Stone and obsidian. It doesn't even touch the ground, it is usually a block or so off the ground. It has a square of glowstone at the top. Are there secrets hidden away in this I'm just not getting, or is it just.. there?
What is the point of these?

As far as I know, those towers almost never have anything in them. I'm told you dig down in them, but I never find a point. But they ARE a nice source of end stone in the overworld.
It has a few uses in GregTech AFAIK. Helium cells, useful for making Helium Coolant cells without cooling plasma from the Fusion Reactor. Good if you can't be bothered with setting one up.
If you have Biomes O' Plenty installed with it, you could use the End Stone to help construct a Ancient Staff (I think that's what it's called) and get to the Promised Land, if you've not heard of it, its a whole new dimension that's all in the sky - Direwolf20 did a mod spotlight last week, go search for it.
Also early soul shards, which now need end stone, netherack and glowstone in a formation in the ground, then diamond right click.
if endstone is checking to see if it's part of a multi block structure, the lag in the end must be HORRIBLE.
Yes, I know, that's the ugliest building facade ever, I made it to showcase how the various blocks (far left) work together and what you could use them for. I recommend using endstone next to lapis highlights because it takes the edge off of the blue/green tint. Glowstone and Gold Blocks look pretty nice next to each other as highlights / lighting for the sandstone. Birch planks are slightly darker / browner than sandstone so they can be used to "frame" the facade.
I prefer building in Vanilla because I know exactly which blocks will go well together, because there are less of them.
I could have a blast spending an hour messing around in FTB but by the end I'd never have anything done.
Obviously more blocks are always nice but when you get to the point that FTB is at it's a little ridiculous.
