What do you use to collect resources?

What different ways are there to collect resources and what are the pros/cons?
Here the ways im aware of:
manual (pickaxe/laser/wand etc)
-very time consuming
Quarry
-uses power
-makes giant holes everywhere
-automatic
rp2 frame quarry
-hard to build
-very cool
-automatic
-makes holes
 
I use custom mystcraft ages with quarries. I really like huge builds so I generally need a lot of materials, I didn't even void my cobble/sand until TE came out with the extruders to satisfy all my needs. Now I just create smooth stone / cobble and pulverize the cobble for sand and I leave that system on pretty much always.

But I still mine Marble and Basalt manually, especially on Basalt I find Silk Touch is a requirement and Marble I can mine faster than a quarry would.

Make an automated "basait generator" work like a cobble one but a lot slower. Idk how to even build such a thing.
 
flat (or plains - almost flat) mystcraft age with max size quarries. In FTB you need resources from all levels of the map (copper is higher for exemple) so quarries are fine for me. Quick to setup and (3 landmarks and a redstone torch to show max range), remote power and item collection with tesseracts, easy overflow cutoff/power switch back at base because of tesseracts.

Isn't basalt only found in volcanoes? I had no idea you could manually create some. If you're commenting on the Silk Touch part, I find getting a silk touch pick is easier than smelting tons of basalt cobblestone manually.
 
Yea you can but I don't know how. I heard it's either have to do something with thempiles or snow. People say it's basically a slow cobble generator.

There is a way to make a basalt(cobble?) generator, though i have no idea how...
I havent really used mystcraft before, how far in the game would i need to be able to get to flat worlds for quarry use? Right now i mine manually cause i dont want to mess up the landscape, though i do have the 11 diamonds needed for a quarry
 
i for one use many turtles i just like it because its a little less automatic then a quarry but also another big reason is i dont want to make massive holes in the overworld. I know about mystcraft but im unable to make a link modifier, so maybe someone can help regarding this. Im using the ftb ultimate pack and the link modifier seems to be disabled. I know the recipe but ive even went into a creative world and tried making it thinking it was the server I was on and it still wouldn’t make. Any idea how to fix this? Or another alternative
 
It's luck, creating random ages (needs book binder and then 1 leather and 1 paper per age) lets you get pages from, abandoned libraries (should be one within 200m of your spawn point in each random age), you can also trade emeralds for pages with mystcraft villagers.

Took me about 60 ages to get flat, but I got plains quite earlier and that may arguable be better as it puts you at around sea level (64) and flat can put you up at 90ish so gives you a lot of low quality rock levels to go through.[DOUBLEPOST=1365784886][/DOUBLEPOST]

Link modifier is no longer available, he plans to add back in the functionality the link modifier added further down the line. I loved having a following book but it was a bit too easy mode, would be nice be able to portal within the same dimension again too but that can be achieved with portal gun portals (and portal spawners) and xeno's reliquary wraith eye/node (costs ender pearls), and a void world nexus is pretty easy to make.
 
I still mine (almost) everything manually. I'm a bit OCD about using Fortune vs Silk Touch vs regular mining of blocks, depending on what ore I'm mining. And after a hard day of problem solving at work, there's something soothing about the mindless repetition of manual mining.

If I ever get lucky enough to get Silk Touch on a Pickaxe of the Core to stick in an Arcane Bore, I might switch over to mass mining using that.
 
In the beginning, I use the IC2 miner using the scanners. Later on, I use BC quarries. After I have almost unlimited resources, I sometimes experiment with tunnel bores and steves carts mining stuff.
 
At first manual (of course)
Then - frame machine or quarry (did'n use the quarry for a long time however)
Then - turtle swarm by me ^_^
