For 1.5 I prefer to have a spawn near a dark node-preferably a barrows. I like having a free wisp factory and I think they look spiffy especially trapped at the top of a tall tower.

For 1.6 I had nothing pressing but my current spawn is nice, near a village with some nicely place slime islands and a natura redwood nearby.

My current seed spawn was awful. Add in BoP update derps to my terrain and my world looks horrible, huge generated chunks along boundaries. Ugh.

I prefer a spawn near a village, or near Badlands since I love clay blocks now. I'd prefer a vanilla forest biome spawn since I settle down I them anyway. I'd live in rain forests but I can't stand the evil, tiny spiders

a flat plains with a forest, jungle, snow and desert biome within a 100 block radius.

Plus Swampland, and I'm ok with having it within a 300-400 block radius. :)

But I also create Mystcraft ages very early on. An Eternal Sun, No Weather, Plains age for animals, villages and access to a couple Thaumcraft hills. (This age is mainly used for beekeeping later on.) And a Mining age with dense ore to run turtles and later quarries in it.

As of recent, I've preferred to live near the coastline. I've really gotten into the whole 'Fuel-Powered Base' thing, so having an established base near the coastline is ideal so I can see the future Oil Rigs from my base.

I almost always build underground, so I normally don't need anywhere good. As long as it isn't a Jungle.

Mountains with ocean, plains and forest in view. I start out in the plains and once i've gotten enough stuff, will start building on the mountains then in the ocean. So I end up with a relatively well tended forest next to farms and animals, with a main building base over looking it all on the mountain and a underwater, usually nether and back up base.

Magical Forest - I've been playing a custom magic mod pack and my spawn was in a Magical Forest from Thaumcraft 4. Gotta say its been a cool spawn. Plenty of Greatwood & Silverwood trees. Even a few trees with magic beans.

EDIT: Another bonus is wisps. The forest seems to have a lot of them and they are easy to kill once you have a couple of wand caps.

Trees trees and more trees is what I look for. They are great materials for starting out (charcoal) and a little bit of free food (apples). I also tend to build my permanent base above ground, so the trees make for a nice view while im slaving away at the crafting table.

Ideal spawn would be rolling forest hills with a jungle and desert nearby

Swamp biome is my ideal one simply because of the sheer numbers of rubber trees in those areas. I hate Jungles ugh. I will work in every biome apart from jungle and desert. I prefer to work NEAR to a desert though handy source of sand and all.

I don't generally get lucky with spawns, so I usually go into creative/use /fly (I had a mod to enable certain commands in single player... Should be in my signature) to get a good spot, usually collecting goodies on the way. (You can call me a cheater of you want, but- oh wait, that is cheating...). But generally for me a good spot is one with oil, silver wood trees (optional... Heh), moderately flat (I have little minecraft architectural skills, and I'm lazy), and maybe some misc stuff like caves and such.
Plus stuff from my jumble of mod- I mean *ahem* "modpack"
