I don't think anyone is saying that she should be forced to update the mod or anything. If she doesn't have the time or the will to update it it's completely fine with me. But then she can either let it 'die off' or hand it over to someone else. That's completely up to Elo.
It's just a tad annoying getting these "Ha look she's back!" threads every 2 months. To me it looks like she actually doesn't want to continue RP2 anymore and people should just let her drop it altogether if she wants. She probably just feels pressured in updating it.
The problem, is the fact that RP2 needs to be continually updated, even if it is only a port of existing functionality, due to Mojang's hyperactive upgrade cycle. Minecraft has traditionally suffered from excessively rapid version instability, but I could tolerate that if the company added genuinely meaningful functionality with each new update. Although the Redstone Update was good, (and in fact added things which we probably should have got a long time ago) for the most part they don't do that.
KingLemming's earlier reprimandment of my, "open source fanaticism," notwithstanding, I think we've reached a point with RP2, where there is no longer any discernible advantage to it remaining closed. If it is true that Eloraam is tired of maintaining it herself, then placing it under a BSD license would free her from the burden of doing so, while at the same time ensuring that her genuinely valuable contributions are not lost, going forward.
I very much appreciate Eloraam's work, and have done so for a long time, as previously mentioned. I therefore feel that the loss of said work would be tragic; and I hope that a means of preserving it can be found.
