I've sorted it out now. I've just made a villager breeder and moved 64 villagers up to where the potion crystals are so they don't die.

Cursed Earth places a status effect on monsters which seemingly makes them despawn randomly even in vincinity of players. I saw mobs vanish before my eyes.
