This is a fad I just don't understand. Minecraft isn't about running a 40 man raid or 100x100x100 RVR, or even a 4 man team orchestrating a coordinated strike. Everywhere I look people use texting for communication, at school, at work, driving down the road, walking down the street, etc. The vast majority of voip chat groups always has that 1 person who whispers (causing you to turn your speakers way up), or that one person with the bass voice who makes your speakers twitch (causing you to turn your speakers way down), or that 9 year old who can't stop dropping the F-bomb every 3 seconds. So why does everyone want to chat on voip while playing Minecraft?

Before people say, "because it's easier or quicker", what, they don't teach typing in school anymore?
Perhaps it is a sign that I am just OG. (original gamer)

The only possible explanation (and reasonable in my mind) is that it frees up your hands to keep playing. The counter to that argument is your brain still has to focus on what is being said.

Exactly the points could not "said" it any better. To add those "VoIP exclusive" servers are also diminishing their accessible to their communities. Even if ones that don't "demand" them and if "no one" uses the in game chat it very LAME for me.

Well at least I am "making lemonade" out of this "fad". ;)

You do know humans are social quasi-hive dwelling creatures right?

I mean we might be a pack of basement cases but a good majority of us like to talk. Not just communicate but talk, with our mouths, using our voice.
Even the most simplest human language blows mostly any creatures method of communication out of the water when it comes to complexity.

The first method of communication we learn assuming you aren't mute is speech.

So it's no bloody wonder people prefer speaking over text. I say this being a borderline antisocial who actually has issues with phones. I guess the difference between me and OP is that I'm aware im an outlier.

In short; speaking comes more naturally to homosapien sapiens. So VOIP is a given.

Ya I am going to have to disagree. If speaking came more naturally to people everyone would be having conversations with their neighbors rather than having their noses stuck in their cell phones. I use phone and video conversations all day at work, so the fact that I prefer text in video games really doesn't say anything about my social proclivities.

That's assuming you want to communicate with your neibours at all.

If I wanted to communicate with them at all I'd just speak to them.

People actually do preffer to talk for communication. Your work with video calls should exemplify that. Sometimes people will call you up for a query even if Email would be a better medium. You could in fact do such work entirely with email or a type of text message system. But we don't.

I just think calling VOIPs a fad is foolishly dismissive at best. You can't deny it, when people want to really communicate they will talk.

If we ever get to a stage in evolution where we forgo speech for digital text ill eat my hat. (Good thing I don't wear them)

Actually VOIPs in certain types of games are nessesary. In the game Rust your chances of being killed rises significantly. If they don't one shot you on sight sometimes they will relent after saying "dont shoot" and let you live. Can't do that typeing as you'd have to stand still making you easier to kill before you press enter.

There's a saying in that community "no mic, no rights". You are seen as a fair kill if you don't respond quickly with the ingame VOIP.

This sort of translates to MC too although not as severely. If you are out and about and you decide to make a lengthy reply to someone in chat all of a sudden a creeper blasts you mid reply, sometimes in your panic you end up transmitting gibberish as you mash your keys to close the chat. Of course a MC TS is likely to be packed so communication is probably not that efficient, you'd likely still get blasted by creepers when you are alt tabbed to find a less packed channel.

At the end of the day people use VOIPs because they want to talk and communicate without any impediments. Some will refuse to use push to talk because they find remembering to press a button to talk gets in the way.

VIOPs are not a fad, they will endure until humanity develops telepathic communication. Wether it be through technology or a sort of biological radio emmiting/ receiving organ (not very likely)

Everyone has their preference I guess. I'll attribute my preference to being OG.

On a side bar, I tried Rust and was extremely frustrated that I could not figure out the controls worth a damn. That is just me being retarded though lol.

Is being OG anything like being a genwunner?

Rust controls like any other FPS, then again firing bows is a bit odd.

No idea what a genwunner is. It seems to be you are just trying to be confrontational though, so just move on.
