Okay, this really feels like a totally noobish question, but I just have to know if I'm missing something really simple.

I run a 2 person server on my local network off my PC, and forever whenever there's been an update I've just headed over to the server download page on the FTB website to download the latest version of the server. Installed it and moved my world over.

What I'm wondering is if there is an easier way to do this? Say, through the launcher?
I know the launcher has the download server button that redirects to the download link, but is there an easier way?

I ask as I'm preparing to update the DW20 1.6 server so I can access the new updates to Ars Magica 2. (Or rather, once 1.0.11 becomes available)

I don't have an answer to your question, but realize that many servers run from a dedicated server or similar, meaning that they don't have access to a Launcher or buttons - they only have access to a terminal, maybe a support team, and maybe if they're really lucky, a special control panel provided by their host that has the magical "upgrade" button.

Personally, when I want to upgrade, I do something similar to what you said. First, I download the new version. then I extract and prep it by updating any configs I care about. Then I shutdown the server, backup the server's minecraft folder and the world folder. Then I copy over the new version stuff - trampling any folder that exists. Then I update any other configs/etc that don't come from the version (e.g. the server config - update it so the message contains the new version). Then the server is ready to start again.

It's a bit of a process, but once you have all the steps written down, it only takes 5 minutes, and updates are pretty infrequent.

Also, if you're running a 2-person network, you might just consider Open To Lan instead. That's what I do whenever my girlfriend and I want to play - because setting up and maintaining a server is a lot of work.

Is there a step by step link anywhere that shows how to go from say Direwolf20 1.0.19 to 1.0.22

Like specifically how to do this update on a server?

Updating is generally pretty straightforward.
Download the new server files, shutdown and backup the server (assume this process will corrupt your world, so a backup is important if you care about your world), then overwrite the folders with the files you downloaded. Then make sure all the permissions on those files are right and start the server. If anything goes wrong, restore the backup.

Note if you use plugins, e.g. mcpc, bukkit, don't overwrite the server jar. It should continue to work, although you might take this time to see if there is an updated version compatible with your version of minecraft.
