I'm just getting started with FTB, had been using a private modpack before (and Tekkit before that). I plan to set up a small, private server with a group of friends (we had previously played with our private modpack we made together, but decided FTB Ultimate had most of what we wanted and would be much easier to work with). We will all be using the same mods and configs (and plan to add 2 mods to the pack, including Mo Creatures), so we don't have to worry about having different / public clients join the server.

My question relates to updating individual mods. If a particular mod comes out with a new version, is it a good idea to update it, or should I wait for the pack to update? If so, do I need to do any special procedures, or just drop it in?

For example, Applied Energistics has updated from revision 9 b (included in the FTB Ultimate pack) to 9 g (still for 1.4.7). The changes between the versions are performance enhancements and bugfixes, no new items or blocks (change log). I would prefer to use the latest version for better performance, so I'd like to update it myself now if I can, rather than waiting for a full FTB pack update.

This may be a noob question (if you can already add / remove mods to FTB, then why wouldn't you also be able to update them?), but I just want to make sure I won't be causing more problems than I solve, if for instance FTB is optimized around having certain sets and versions that work well together, so downloading "updated" mods would break that and cause performance issues or errors. Part of this is me remembering my private custom modpack days, when we'd go manually update mods in the hope that mod makers had ironed out bugs and improved performance.

You can manually update the mods in the same fashion as you would a standard Minecraft client, by going into the same folder sets where the pack is kept. However, you may need to rely on helping your server members on manually updating that mod into the latest version. I believe that's the only hitch with this. You will then have to ignore the launcher wanting to "re-update" itself, until the pack actually moves into 1.5.1

Hope that helps at least...

Thanks, that does help

Well it's a private server with just a few friends, so that's doable. Getting a nag message will be a bit of a pain, I may try to see if there's a way around that by adding it as a new mod in the launcher.
