I've just started playing unleashed after a hiatus for the last 5 or 6 months. I see that Redpower is gone, and there are some new mods like Tinkers Contruct and MFR. I think thaumcraft has been updated too.

There are so many mods in this pack that I won't be able to get into all of them. So, which mods are the "absolutely can't miss" ones that I HAVE to play with?

I think Tinkers Construct is one of the interesting ones. Thaumcraft has not changed a lot in the time window you provided (1.6 version is a lot different).
MFR i don't know some things are OK, some are way OP in my eyes, I just use 2 or 3 machines from mfr.
Dartcraft yould be interessting but i haven'd used it much except for some fancy stone blocks.
Applyed Energistics i dont know, i think it was in this state 6 month ago.
Maybe the new forestry multiblock farms. Extra trees the woodworker is really cool.

Over all not too much has changed from 1.4.7 standpoint. The bigger changes are all in die 1.6 versions of the mods.

It is hard to say without knowing what playstyle you're after. Not to mention the vast shift about to take place with the move to 1.6.4 Unleashed, upon release of the new launcher.

For lack of remembering what specifics changed between 1.4.7 and 1.5.2 it may be good to poke around at what new stuff appears. Tinker's Construct/Natura are definitely worth exploring. Dartcraft and MFR have qualities unique to themselves. Thaumcraft evolved a lot. Applied Energistics has some interesting new mechanics like the Quantum Singularity. Logistics Pipes is back and integrates well with AE. Modular Powersuits will blow your mind once you dig in. Once you go Biomes O' Plenty, you'll never go back. :)

You call MFR OP then suggest DartCraft lol :D

I will second Tinkers Construct, it is a very fun mod.
Applied Energistics, however, is my must-have from Unleased (or any future tech modpack I play)

BuildCraft. Cheap item sorting and fluid transportation at the beginning, still a great sorting system in late game. Also, gates + pipe wires are fun to play with.

Applied Energistics. Great mid to high tier storage options. Superb inventory management system. Fun mod overall.

Thermal Expansion. Loving it for the tesseracts mostly but the redstone energy conduits as well as liquiducts is great.

MFR. I just like it. It has a lot of great machine blocks and with TE recipes enabled, it isn't too cheap to say, when compared to it's original recipe. And the machines works great with a lot of mods.

This

Also would say that to get the most out of Tinkers construct and Dartcraft start using them early in your new game. I waited till I had all my usual stuff set up and by that time I already had the IC2 tools, thaumcraft wands etc. So the tools from TC and Dartcraft were rather unimpressive compared. But could have been nice to have early on.

Thanks everyone. I've been enjoying tinkers construct, especially loving the hammer and lumber axe. I've played with buildcraft and TE in the past and like them. glad to see they're still around.

I need to get into AE and MFR.

AE is wonderful. It makes sorting and crafting so much more convienient. Absolutely recommend it to everyone that has more than a chest worth of stuff. Being able to store tens of thousands of objects in the space of a double-wide vanilla chest is ungodly (well, 3 blocks worth of space if you want to pull stuff back out again, but still!)

Storage is cool, but its real strength is the amazing possibilities of automation it gives.

It's disabled by default, but I would recommend taking a look at Enchanting Plus. The mod completely eliminates RNG from enchanting, and also adds capabilities to re-enchant, going up to 72 level enchants, and XP-only repairs.

While obviously being more powerful than vanilla enchanting, I feel that having control is much more important than "balance". For me it's basically the core of Minecraft. You have simple tools with known behaviors that you then use to progress based on your own choices and knowledge. Vanilla enchanting is more or less the exact opposite of that, and as such doesn't belong in Minecraft (IMHO).

Absolutely; I merely meant that a neophyte to the mod would see the immediate value in the storage, but you're exactly right; the automation possible with busses etc. are a pretty wild ride.

Factorization. those routers are a godsend when you need to insert/pull items from banks of similar machines, even from specific slots
Thermal Expansion. the cyclic assembler is badass for rapid fabrication of items, all the machines are pretty awesome. tesseracts are vital for moving things around without cluttering up the map with pipes/wires
Buildcraft. pipes, pipes, and more pipes. gates/autoarchic gates help with automating things
MFR. tree farms, mob spawners/grinders, generating fertilizer, breeding animals, biofuel, and the all mighty deep storage unit. laser drill is awesome when your too lazy to go mining for ores. rednet is pretty awesome too, at least a nice stand in for the missing redpower stuff we all miss from ultimate
Soul Shards. when we need lots of mob loot, those soul cages are the way to go
Extra Utilities. cursed earth rocks for dark room spawners. the bud block is awesome for reed farms. iron spikes makes mob spawners even more efficient, and adds in rare mob drops youd only get if you killed them yourself (minium shards, bags of loot)
RailCraft. steam. massive storage tanks. all sorts of awesome rail automation. and some very cool decorative blocks (fitted abyssal stone my fav)
IndustrialCraft. nuclear power. solar power. generators. wind mills. water power. and all sorts of machines to grind, macerate, compress and recycle all those extra things you dont know what to do with.
Applied Energistics. amazing for automated production and crafting, pretty powerful system when you need to automate complex processes that cannot be handled with crafting grids.
ComputerCraft. turtles, the most amazing little machines ever. dig, chop, mine, craft, do all sorts of cool tasks. add MiscPeripherals and you get all sorts of neat little robotic minions to do your bidding.
Forestry. lots of stuff here dealing with trees, bees, butterflies. has a cool multifarm device. bee breeding. add ExtraBees and MagicBees and you can produce pretty much any element in the game
MystCraft. bored with the overworld? generate some new dimensions! if your lucky youll roll out a nice dimension that will provide some cool traits like diamond veins, nether fortresses in a desert, etc.
