Unable to fill steam engines?

So I can't figure out how to get steam into my industrial steam engines. I've tried liquiducts and cobblestone (I'm out of gold) waterproof pipes from my boiler to my engines, but the engines just read zero (the pipes clearly have steam in them). I've tried connecting both types of pipes to the engines on all sides, but they just won't accept any steam!

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Have you turned the engine on with a redstone signal? The engines won't fill up initially until you try to turn them on the first time.

I had been powering them, but it appears that the power wasn't actually being transferred to the engines. Whoops! :oops:
