Unable to connect to any servers

I have been playing single player FTB for about 2 weeks now and decided to try out multiplayer, however, I am unable to connect to any server. When I add the server IP address it just says "Can't reach server". I have tried direct connecting multiple times to my friend's server but it just ends up saying "Logging in..." for a while until it says "Connection Lost, End of stream".

Does anyone have an idea as to why I am unable to connect to (or see) any online servers?
