if I am to produce fuel to power my base, and I want both thermal expansion and buildcraft machinery. I would need to produce RF.

how much difference is it between using a high pressure boiler and compression dynamos, how many compression dynamos running on fuel would I need to generate the same amount of energy, and how much more fuel is consumed?

Might need a little more clarification. Do you plan to find and produce oil/fuel or are you considering biofuel/ethanol? Renewable ethanol is a very popular setup nowadays. Automated treefarm of your choice would probably produce enough resources for at least one solid and liquid fueled boiler. As far as which is more efficient, I believe that I read that a boiler setup is more efficient if you are running it nonstop 24/7. Just pump all of the steam into steam dynamos and voila lots of RF.

so you can pum the steam into steam dynamos? do not need to burn coal in them?

Just have a wither skeleton drop spawner and make the coal into steam. From there steam can be used in a lot of different power options

follow up question on the steam dynamo. how many steam dynamos can a full high pressure boiler support?

Steam Dynamo = Industrial Steam Engine.

So 18, IIRC.

Consumes 40mb of steam/t to produce 80RF/t (equals to 8mj/t).

1 high pressure boiler does not seem to be able to keep up with 18 steam dynamos. the amount of steam in the boiler is kept at half capacity and the dynamos are blinking, not fed enough. the boiler is only at 380 degrees so far, will it produce the steam faster as it reaches 1000 degrees, or will it only consume less fuel by then?

The newest railcraft changed the boiler setup so that it produces more steam (and consumes more fuel I think) the hotter it gets. If you have a charged up firestone you can heat a solid fuel boiler very fast from what I've seen.

I am using a Steve's Cart Tree farm with an advanced smelter in the cart. Automagically cooks all wood into charcoal which I am feeding into A barrel system and than into steam dynamos. Stupid simple and works well for me until I come up with a more obscure power system.

Thermal Expansion 3 Reactant Dynamos are the shit. They run on some weird fuels, and some of them last a very long time. I personally enjoy running them on sugar and using sludge or liquid glowstone as the liquid.

Hmmm...

This + enderman spawner + Gregtech would mean an infinity of nitro coalfuel, which is 18,000 heat per cell in a boiler...
And can be liquid transposed...

HMMMM...

EDIT: Sorry, being kinda off-topic, unless the OP actually has Gregtech? In which case I love you.

DW20 pack does not include gregtech sadly. not extra bees in this version either, which is extra sad because I wanted infinite oil production. soooo I made an oil ocean age.

it works with tcon/tmech in my ssp world :)
Are you using the Feed the Beast launcher? I know that they work on their own, but every time I tried running them on the FTB launcher (which was two, admittedly) the game simply quit the moment it began.

Binnie's mod works fine in DW20 1-6-4 pack.

I found on reddit some math about reactant dynamos values aobut what liquid and solid items works in it.

http://en.reddit.com/r/feedthebeast/comments/1tvxyi/thermal_expansion_reactant_fuel_values/

So in the config we know that reactant fuels give us the follow RF per bucket of fuel:

glowstone 750,000
redstone 600,000
mobessence 500,000
biomass 450,000
seedoil 250,000
creosote 200,000
sewage 12,000
sludge 12,000

But reactant dynamos also need a solid fuel component (reactant). So what about those values? Well it turns out you only get a certain burn time depending on what reactant you use in the dynamo. After some testing, this is how much RF you get from using the following materials:

nether star 6,400,000
ghast tear 1,600,000
blaze powder 640,000
gunpowder 160,000
sugar 16,000

Of course you need enough fuel to be able to produce those higher values though. So to find out how many buckets of fuel you would need per reactant, or vice versa, simply do some mathing....

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ApbbAUHZTALUdEduaDdOM2prZXpQX2ZvU1JmWXo5Ync&usp=sharing

Hmm maybe i will use ony reactant powered by glowstone and blaze powder - sweet. i have both farms for those - sweet :)

Hydrogen generator setup with 2 electrolytic separators and an 1 aqueous accumulator per 5 sets will generate about 24 MJ (separators require some fraction of the power) per tick (3 steam dynamos) infinitely. I built a large setup of them about 20. With 20 sets you can make about 480 MJ
:D
