Though I feel like minecarts are severely underused in FTB.
MineCarts are inferior to the majority of other transportation systems because they are not instant.
Yep, precisely why I feel they should be used more! That is, they're dated. Thus someone ought to come up with something extremely clever to do with them.
It was much more of an aesthetic choice and it gave me something to do. I normally hate building things (I play on peaceful so all I ever make for a house or area is a couple of wood planks on the ground) that I don't use, and canals seemed to have a function. It really isn't that great seeing as how I can't transport anything on boats (Traincraft, please make yourself useful, now's your chance)They are inefficient (although Chocorate's [I'm assuming at least] boat transportation system would give them a run for their money in that regard) and, as such, no where near the best choice, so it really is only going to be people that want something that is "different". I don't think it can be fixed, either, although possibly mixed with MystCraft, and maybe ComputerCraft so you type in where you want to go and a minecart takes you there.
Of course, you could always just walk, right? Heh heh.

It could be as simple as railcraft's train cart system, and Storage boats. Also steam. Just throw some steam into the mix.Boatcraft would be a fairly awesome mod, or perhaps Steve's Boat, eh?
Nah, on my last world (my first and last finished canal) I had pigs and chickens floating around because they'd walk in and the current would carry them around.i love your canal idea, chocorate. i can almost picture building a small city akin to venice, with nothing but canals. no roads at all.
you'd have squid coming out your ears, though.
Well, at least railcraft adds a bit to rails.
If you plan right, you can travel quite fast, at a decent cost.
Sure, when you can afford teleporters without troubles, or when you have enough portals (portal spawner, or crystals ones), it becomes less efficient, but it's still cooler.
imo, instant transportation is another area where mods have reduced the game to nothingness. you don't mine, you don't farm, you don't fight (a worthy opponent, at least) and you don't even walk/boat/fly/train any more.
I used to play with friends on a Tekkit server, where we pretty quickly had teleporters going everywhere and never touched Railcraft. I felt like we'd missed some fun stuff. This time we're disabling all teleport tech (including portal guns, tesseracts and other "magic" item/liquid/energy transport) and sticking to conventional transportation. Mystcraft is still enabled but we're disabling portals and pre-creating linking books to a central return spot, so we don't have ad-hoc portal hubs everywhere. They're pretty excited to get back to basics, so to speak.
"easy" is relative. you still have to gather resources and if you want any automation you'l have to gather resources and configure the mods properly. only if you understand it of course. This game is about creativity. Golem farms make iron from nothing after some work. would you say they make vanilla too easy? People skip hundreds of overworld blocks in vanilla by nether portal hopping. does that make the game too easy? people even take wheat, books, carrots, potatoes and sometime if they're luck DIAMONDS from villages and temples and dungeons instead of tedious hours mining and harvesting. is THAT too easy? lol.I have to agree here, seems like most mods are used to make the game easier, rather than intended.
