Do you use some other block breaker to obtain your ardite and cobalt? I remember bronze not being a high enough mining level to mine them, hence the need for steel/alumite. I do usually make my first few tools out of bronze though, and I hardly ever upgrade from a bronze lumber axe unless I have TinkerTweaks to upgrade individual parts as I deem fit.

Actually, I think you're right.

I was being wrong in the interwebs and for this I apologise.

Usually I stop at Steel head and Thaumium everything else for picks, I don't have much reason to go further than that. A hammer with a stone head because it can be cheaply made and repaired. Usually for weapons I'll go with a longsword and frying pan early game. I don't like using flight items (closest I'll get is a hang glider), so I like the longsword for the lunge you can do, it's great for all sorts of parkour type stuff. When I can get my hands on three platinum ingots, I'll make a flamestring shiny longbow with max redstone modifiers. Still takes several seconds to draw back, but that doesn't matter much when you can one-shot mobs hanging out on the border of mob render distance.
