Blank casts are used in making drawbridges.

I tend to use creepers to skip over wooden tools. Let them blow, then pick up the stone they cause to drop. I use that to start mining iron.

LOL, nice. Creeper quarry. I wonder if there is a way to make a creeper spawner, direct them to a specific spot, and trigger their explosion. Golems, perhaps ?

That's exactly my usual configuration I tend to op out of auto smelt though at least for a standard tool. Of course I don't stick to stone tools forever.
But I will use the stone tools to gather a good amount of copper, tin and iron along with the aluminum ore that comes with that. Once I have enough for one bar of Aluminium Brass I'll make a metal pick for gold and diamond level stuff.

That's one of the great things about TiC. It strikes a great balance between tiered upgrades and choice. You can't craft end-game TiC tools without previous TiC investment, but there are many valid paths to get there.

TiC is with me from day 1, hour 1, minute 1, right up until the next world reset.

Do note that, unless you get lucky and find a bucket somewhere, you'll have to smelt three iron to make a bucket to power a smelter. Other than that you don't need any metal before you can start doubling your metal. You'll just need a lot of charcoal or coal to make a smelter.
You can also go with 3 tin and 12 cans.

I keep forgetting cans exist :p

TiC, while still being resource intensive, doesn't require much METAL to get started on ore doubling. It probably takes a little longer than other options but is good if you want to save as much of your starting metal as possible. Though it does take more work to remove said metal from the container.
