I've been playing on a monster server (1.1.9) and had a quick TC question. Yesterday I made a cobalt hammer and somehow it got fortune 3, AND looting 3. I made a new hammer with both Manyulluyn and cobalt, but when I maxed the lapis out it only had fortune 3. Was my first hammer luck? Or maybe even a bug?? I would like to know how to put fortune 3 and looting 3 back on my new hammer if its usually a normal thing to do. If its a bug I guess ill just hang my old hammer on the wall ^_^

Go around and hit mobs with your new hammer. It should jump up to looting 3. It works the same way as fortune does in that using the thing will
The hammer is a weapon as well as a tool, it's no bug and it's not particularly useful anyways.
Yes I intended on fortune 3 on my hammer but after a bit of use I noticed it had looting 3. I'm not sure if it came during the process of moding my hammer, or if it came after I was hitting mobs with it. I may have even hit a few mobs before I maxed it out with lapis, I'm not sure.
This happens with the battleaxe also. What I've noticed is that if you just drop lapis on it, you will get one but not the other. If you hit things/break stuff/whatever, it will build up both. It was always annoying for me, because by default adding lapis to the battleaxe only gives you fortune, but what I was really after was looting.
I also seen to recall that if you dropped max lapis on it you would no longer be able to build up looting by breaking things. I did not heavily test this, so I could be wrong.

I'm testing this as we speak. I think what happened was I still needed 2 lapis to max my old hammer. Your probably about being unable to get both once you max it out. I'm going to try and put lapis on a new hammer but not max it and see if I get them both.
Never use more than one lapis. The hammer will slowly increase the 'amount' on it, as you mine, even if it's two thousand blocks of cobble. The same for Picks. Works on weapons as well, such as swords.
