So my problem is that I have about 20 or so tier 5 spawners in a drop trap falling 50 blocks and spawn a verity of mobs, and it works perfectly whilst I'm in the area, but when I leave nothing spawns. So, the spawners are for sure loaded using a chicken chunks chunkloader (I've tried other loaders). I know the area is loaded because I've tested pumping items from one ended chest to another. Now the strange part is that they do work if no one is online. And I know for sure that they aren't despawning because of the distance or anything like that. Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you on a 1.5 mod pack? I'm going to assume that you are, but if you aren't, then this may not be helpful. The problem you're having is not that the mobs no longer spawn when you're away, but that they are immediately despawning, per the rules of vanilla minecraft. The best bet to ensure continuous running of the spawners would be to put them in a dimension that nobody ever visits, such as a mystcraft age especially made for your mob traps.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I am in the 1.4.7 ultimate pack so it's nothing to do with any kind of nurf. Also the mobs are NOT despawning since the spawners work when no one is online. Please keep your suggestions coming in!

Well that they work when no one is online is kind of a "bug" of minecraft. I have no way to realy explain it. maby someone else does? But indeed try another dimension because that should get it to work as long as no one else is there because of the same "bug".

Ah, that may be, but I should also mention that it used to work, I also had it in an age where no one went and it worked great, but all of a sudden it stopped. I hoped that moving it into the overworld would fix the issue but evidently not..

Vanilla despawning mechanics, if there's a player around but out of 128 blocks away, the mob will despawn right after it spawns. The t5 cage will work only if a player is within 128 blocks away from it or no one else is online.

A I've said, the mobs are not despawning. If that were the case, there would be no need for the tier 5 spawner in the first place (or whatever level they start spawning when you're not near). Let alone the fact that it used to work or the fact that they are not normal vanilla mobs, since they won't go on a soul shard or when you're killed by them it reads differently.

and it almost useless with that major nerf. You may as well use MFR for automated mob spawning.

I like the MFR spawning mechanics more then I ever liked Soul Shards.
also note, if you're not trying to get a specific mob to spawn, the cursed earth from Extra Utilities is also a very good option

*sigh* I'm trying to help here and not trolling you but they do despawn. For some reason, if there's no player online, at all, the mobs will spawn just fine and get grounded up by the Grinders.
But, if there is a player around, and is further than 128 blocks away from the spawners, the spawner will still spawn them but the spawned mobs will despawn instantaneously.
0 players = no problem.
1 or more players not within 128 blocks from auto-spawner = not gonna work.

There is a limit on how many chunks you can load. You might be exceeding that limit.
