So I've heard several times that crossbows are hard-capped at a 0.5s reload time. I've been poking through the source code, though, and I can't find anything to support that. What the code seems to do is this:
1) It is impossible to, through the use of redstone, reduce reload time below 0.25s
2) This restriction does not apply to the base, unmodified reload speed of the weapon. If your bow limb material and bowstring combine to give a reload speed below 0.25s, this is absolutely fine. The only combination I'm aware of that does this is signalum limbs and an enchanted fabric string.
Does anyone have a source on the 0.5s assertion? Because as far as I can tell it's just not true.
