Dan has been watching them for a while and noticed how often they use the notebook. And i didn't throw a brick at them, it's just the size if a pebble thrown on the floor towards them, to get their attention.

It would be a solo expedition, the other two need not cooperate. Something like, during surveillance, "From the rooftop, Raymond could see two separate hordes of zombies converging on a dead-end alley." And then he'd tell the others to wait while he checks it out.
