Thinking about buying my own server this time around, will these specs work though?

I found a company where I could possibly actually buy a server and not pay month to month basis and want to know will these configurations of the server will work. Here what they are

PowerEdge T110 II
PowerEdge T110 II Chassis with Cabled 4x3.5 Hard Drives
Processor
Intel® Xeon® E3-1220v2 3.10 GHz, 8M Cache, Turbo, Quad Core/4T (69W)
Hard Drives (Multi-Select) 1TB 7.2K RPM SATA 3Gbps 3.5in Cabled Hard Drive
Memory
2GB Memory (1x2GB), 1600Mhz, Single Ranked, Low Volt UDIMM

This come with 33% off discount which bring down the price to $622.77 and free shipping which the unit will take up to a week once order is placed. So will those specs work for decent FTB server? If not what's would I need to get instead to make it a decent server.

Yea but hey I can upgrade that later for one lump than paying month by month for just added ram. 2GB should do about 5-10 players as I heard so just correct me if I'm wrong on that. So this should work then beside that? The reason I only want 2GB now is that I'll want to upgrade only when needed and not go for 4,8,16 GB right off the bat just to waste added money for not using that very soon.

Bear in mind before ordering what your home upload speed is, on FTB each player can require up to and over 1mbps each. so if your upload speed is an average 10mbps, then no matter how much you upgrade your ram, your server won't be able to support much more than 10 people on FTB and 20-30 on vanilla. So yea server stats are the most important part, but don't go rushing in to a $600 purchase without questioning whether or not your internet can handle it first.

Yea really isn't too bright of an idea to go and blow that money if you can't even run it. You know what's they say "if you can't use it then it's not worth a dine" that why I'm trying to get second opinions on this before I blow it. So yea your correct that's will be my bottleneck but I don't plan on having a huge server anyway, just 10 very active people is fine to me and I can deliver a good playing environment to a couple rather than "breaking" the game trying to have 50 people on it. So that's will separate most servers on the "market" cause I'm planning on doing it another way than paying businesses bills and profit margins. Isn't going to be dirt cheap but hey I'll be paying less in the long run after the big "lump". So yea ought to check my internet to make sure I can have a decent number of people on prior to.

To be quite frank thats sort of a rip off in terms of performance per dollar. This build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/19UzK would destroy that hardware in raw performance and with that solid state drive chunks will load extremely fast for people, so flying with a Gravisuit won't bring the server to its knees hopefully.

Just get the hardware I suggested, put a nice Linux Distro like Ubuntu on it and your good to go. For the setup you will need a screen, keyboard, mouse and a USB to install from. Assuming your internet can support it, this will be capable of handling many more people than the scam those people are selling. If you know nothing of Linux it should still be fairly easy and myself and others could walk you through it.

Wow cool! thanks for putting together a build list for me, yea.. gotta agree on that part that they are ripping off. From a pizza parlor charging me $8 for a 9" pizza that the cheese didn't even stay on the slices to a 2GB server that's cost more than that build list cause of all those combo deals and buying separate parts is just plain cheaper cause your not paying labor costs for the factory to put it together. But yea 700~ kbps is just plain o turd in a can upload speed..:( I may be able to look for a service provider hook me up with faster uploads and at least still save dollars over time. Beside I just want to do this any way beside these barriers in the way. I do dislike server hosts anyway and don't want to deal with them again and do this instead. Btw I won't have to worry about getting almost 700 bucks in 6 days now I know this other company is indeed a scam and just another company that is getting too high profit margins. Best bangs for your bucks now days is to build/make part by part. From pizzas to servers lol.

Yup, Pizza is a good analogy I guess. What you could do is build the box in your home, then perhaps a trusted friend with faster internet could host it in their house. If thats not possible you could look into something called Co-Location. Basically you pay a company a certain amount of money per month and they put your hardware in their data center and supply power and fast internet. I have heard this is possible for as little as $500 a year, but $450 seems to be the lowest unless you get a code for a certain percentage off. Just beware that means you might need to put the server in a server style case so they can rack it with all the others.

Edit: https://www.datashack.net/ is one provider of Colocation. A benefit of doing it this way is that when you decide to stop running a Minecraft server, they just mail you back your hardware. They are in Kansas City, famous for the starting point of Google Fiber, you will get great bandwidth there.

Oh cool thanks. Will have to look into that if I'm not able to get a faster internet in someone house that I know of.
