With advancements in forge I have noticed more non-minecrafty looking items. A lot of mods lately have been using custom models in their mods. The ones I really don't like are the ones that look like real objects in minecraft, I don't think it belongs. I feel as if they are breaking a big theme that minecraft has going for it. I'm not sure if anyone else feels this way or if I'm just being critical.

Ars Magica blocks. The arcane reconstructor is one great example. While they look nice they are very jarring. Blocky ... blocks right next to a greatly detailed machine.

I agree that it can be a visually odd juxtaposition.
But part of that is due to the fact that these more detailed models are still new. Given time, I expect there will be an increasing number of highly-detailed objects, at which point they won't look out of place anymore.

Speaking as both a modder and a player here.

To me there's a difference between a high-detail model and a model that looks good. Minecraft has an aesthetic, whether or not you like it. What's the most visually complex things in the game? Hoppers, the dragon healing node things, repeaters, brewing stands.. these all have models much more detailed than "a cube" yet they fit because they obey some of the basic rules of the game's style. They are composed of more or less entirely flat edges and nearly all right angles at joints. Objects with more than four sides are rare (MC drawing with quads may be part of why). Objects that do not follow this rule look out of place - models with many parts, or especially round parts, a significant number of slopes, etc. It's like showing up to a pencil art contest with paints, it just doesn't fit.

There is nothing wrong with custom models (though I personally don't use many because until recently I have not had access to someone that can make them) - look at say, BuildCraft or Thermal Expansion. That's custom, but nobody is going to say that BC engines or TE conduits look out of place. I say this is because they follow the aesthetic correctly. Mods that go crazy on detail look out of place though, the same way this recent trend of 32x default textures does. More detail does not automatically equal better looking.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Nothing wrong with custom/fancy shapes- as long as the entire object is made out of voxels (cube pixels), then it looks awesome.
-the modular powerfister looks epic, where's the rest of the powersuit uses polygons and looks like shite in the MC universe.
(it'll look awesome in a different game, not saying its bad- it just doesn't fit)
