Yes, if you use the node as a water source over a regenerating source block.
In 1.6 you don't actually need them, but it's them that speed it up to the point that makes it legendary =)
In 1.7 I believe I read they are actually necessary.
I'm a little worried about the speed though. Some parts of the system have a traffic of several stacks per second at times of high activity.
...
ME network buses: too slow, no matter the settings I've tried so far.
Whaaat? Each Export/import bus can operate at a pace of 4 stacks per second(and you can just put several bus on the same item), transport is instant across distances. IMO it is far superior than the other alternatives you posted. You must have been doing something wrong if it could not even keep up with Itemducts lol.
All right, the mining upgrades did the trick, unintuitive as that may be for taking in water. I added 24 to get water at a rater of about 10-12 buckets per second. I can imagine what happens if I use the maximum amount of 256 upgrades.

4 stacks per second is a joke compared to the one stack per tick a Mk3 Extractor Module from Logistics Pipes can move. Just do some automining with well-powered and enchanted RotaryCraft boring machines and you'll see why such speeds are needed.
