Okay I am looking here as to when people hurry off to the End so they can beat the dragon? I am pondering going creative in my SSP to get then eyes of ender just to locate the stronghold, place a marker, and go there maybe when I have fully enchated armour. Any one go sooner, later, not at all? Thanks

I've never beat the Dragon yet 
But I'm not going there unless I craft the Thaumcraft wands of Fire and Electricity, increase as much as possible my Ars Magica levels so as to have MUCH mana and MANY spells and finally craft some Xeno's Reliquary stuff to help me with the killing.

The thing that I find that kills you in the End is when you 'aggro' everything around you, in which Enderman swarm around and start attacking as you engage the dragon. If you can dodge the dragon and dodge the Enderman, you should be find with the hard hitting weapons from Xeno's and IC2. I've yet to test and see if snowmen and iron golems can help 'thin the herd' to keep Endermen at bay as you engage the dragon. Then again, I don't have any uses for the End (as of yet, at least), so by the time I walk in there in SMP, the dragon is already dead...

Make a bow with punch II, infinity, power & or fire, kill all the healing node things jet pack helps here, after that killing the dragon is pretty easy, attack it with bow & when its swoops on you use sword to block, to lvl a shard make a roof 3x3 2 blocks above ground endermen cant get to you while your standing under, just look at them to agro, rinse & repeat.
We killed the dragon a few weeks ago, I stupidly flew right up to a crystal and exploded and lost all my stuff (including a jetpack). We then proceeded to kill the dragon the old fashioned way (with bows).
The dragon can't hurt you in full diamond armour. It'll be able to hit you but not damage you. The only way to die is either from the endermen or from the dragon pushing you off.
Well I used creative mode to find where the stronghold is roughly located at. A good 600 blocks away from my camp but it won't take me too long to dig to it if I keep mining. Side topic but something I am happy about, I found my first emerald mining tonight. Yeah I know it is not a major thing but considering I never seen the ore before it was cool to see get it. I need to go back to see if there are more.
Overkill or not, I'm going there all guns blazing 'cause I've never killed it before But I'll probably panic and die a horrible death hahahahaha I think all I need is the flying spell from Ars Magica along with a couple long range spells and many mana potions... When I manage to kill it using mods, I'll try Dravarden's way in Vanilla.
RetroGamer, a quarry (manual or BC) is your best bet, especially in a large Extreme Hills. They're pretty scarce when caving but mining a quarry can result in a nice yield. I prefer to quarry with a pickaxe 'cause I can Fortune the sucker and end up with stacks of the stuff, not knowing what to do with it

Mining Laser works pretty well against the Ender Dragon. He's not actually that hard, the problem are the Endermen, as most have already said here, but there's a mod item that helps with that. Armor made from Fiery Ingots, made by mixing Hydra Blood with Iron Ingots, have the Fiery Aura enchant... Endermen lose the aggro when they're on fire, and this enchant constantly puts mobs around you on fire, so they'll come, get on fire, lose aggro, etc...
Put a pumpkin on your head. Don't need worry about Endermen then. I think Optifine lets you hide the annoying pumpkin screen effect.
you can also edit the jar png picture, is under the folder misc (and if your screen is too dark and is hard to see, also chnage the vignette one)
