does that mean that the cheese stands alone is actually sort of legal?

because unless I am mistaken they are the same card, even the manacost >_>

The Cheese Stands Alone was printed in Unhinged and has a silver border, and thus is not legal in any tournaments (save Unglued/Unhinged block draft or constructed, I guess), so people don't usually use it even in casual decks. Barren Glory was made later on because Wizards decided that "you win if all you have is this card" is actually not so far out there, and they wanted to make it tournament-legal. But because rules, and because "The Cheese Stands Alone" is a really weird name for a non-parody card, they had to make a new card that did the same thing. Hence, Barren Glory.

I think that that slug might've directly inspired the Pacts. Unglued, if I remember correctly, was printed during/shortly after the Mirrodin block (at least, a lot of the cards are Mirrodin jokes), which was a couple years before Time Spiral.
