So I've been looking into making a mob farm for xp/items. I saw this really cool one that used shifting slabs with pistons and a huge drop area, but I've been worried about the spawn rates of my SMP server. Since we're using the FTB with Thaumcraft, I've managed to get pretty far in that department. I have a pair of sinister nodes in a jar, and have been considering how to implement them into the farm.

I know they only work at night, but they would be pretty effective at spawning furious zombies, right?
How high would they have to fall in order for it to kill them? I was thinking of having the bottom patrolled by a remote attack turtle or two and possibly a few other changes to the farm to use non-vanilla resources.

Does anyone have any suggestions to improve this design, or specifically advice about how to make the best use of the sinister nodes?

I have no idea; I haven't tried it yet.. I was just watching a youtube video of the mob farm I was going to try and they indicated that the golems get attacked by creepers and zombies.

You should test it out in a creative world then. Personally, I'll go with the attack turtles :D

Yeah I'm looking at the design the guy made and am trying to see how I can make it more efficient with the modpack's extra stuff.
The original farm design video I found is here:
And I was starting on it when I realized how expensive mat-wise having a floor made of hoppers was. :/

Snapshots?
Haven't you seen RW_Tema's "Dog"? Get a thaumium golem with upgrades.
I haven't ._.

The video title stated that it was for 1.8, 1.8 is when mobs started to attack Iron Golems. It should be fine for 1.6.4 and 1.7

It's because no mods is updated for 1.8 yet, mainly because its official release is not out yet. 1.7 is the current official version that Minecraft is on and that FTB is updating to.

Oooooh. Okay I get it now.

So do you think there are some ways to make that design more useful and perhaps efficient with some of the FTB mods? I was thinking lacing a few brains in jars under the slabs and see if they can still capture the xp. I was also thinking of replacing the slabs with open item grates so they can fall straight through them. I need to learn more about compucraft to program an attack turtle or two and have them work in that area.

Is there a better way to get items to the chests at the end? Item tubes and a Diamond chest or two?

Oooh! What about making a few harvester golems under a layer of item grates that moves the items to the chests and then have brains in jars scattered under the grates to catch the xp?

Sounds nice :), won't some of the items get stuck on top of the item grate though?
There's also the option of using Vacuum hoppers from OpenBlocks or the AutoSpawner from MinefactoryReloaded ;)

I have no idea if the item grate jams up. I am moderately advanced in Thaumcraft (Managed to snag two sinister nodes in jars and have my first node stabilizer) and can make straw golems. I think the golem thing would be better than a bajillion expensive hoppers.
