Alright, so I finished all of the tier one stuff and have moved on to tier 2 but am having problems with some of the research. I'm trying to research a specific item, the wand of equal trade, but every time I keep putting in items to research it is coming up with other theories. Is their anyway to select what I want to research? Or at least a way to put items in a certain order so the game knows I want to research a specific thing?

As far as I know, there is not way to select what theories you get in what order, other than beginning with items that have particular aspects on them if you happen to know (or are able to guess) what aspects will be on the item that you want to research.
EDIT: So in your case, try to think about what kind of aspect would likely be heavily involved with "trading". ;)

That said, when you get a theory other than the one you wanted, make sure to finish researching it anyway! Otherwise you will probably keep getting it over and over...

I had the same problem, I ended up looking at what aspects were in the theory that I wanted, that were not in as many other possible theories I was able to research at that time. Sort of trying to force it in the direction you want it to go, but it's basically random. I've read that certain things physically around the research desk can provide a bonus to certain aspects while researching, perhaps that can help if you have are using an item(s) with a low aspect value.

From what I've done, the research table will favour the research that best fits the given aspects. So, if you put in Blaze rods for precantio, but they also have ignis, it'll favour something like the wand of fire (which requires both of these) over the wand of equal trade (which requires just one).

As has been said either ponder the apects likely to be needed, or cheat and look at the wiki, and tailor the aspects in the table along this. Remember that you can have more than 1 item in the table at a time, to increase the number of aspects that you have.

Bibble brings up a very good point for any aspiring Thaumaturge!

...Remember that you can have more than 1 item in the table at a time, to increase the number of aspects that you have.

If you decide to use the various wiki's, look at what aspects you need for your theory, and then look at all the items that carry that/those aspect(s), you can try to jam in as many of the necessary aspects needed for just your theory, possibly items that have more than one of what you want, without pushing out the aspects of the other items you are researching with that you want.
