Nothing special? Is there something that works like the portable black hole somewhere else?

Not that I'm aware of, but I hate the portable black hole, so I don't miss it even a little bit.

There are two kinds of Thaumcraft players--people who want the stuff and people who want the experience. I was always a stuff Thaumcraft player. I hate scanning, research, infusion crafting, taint, flux/instability, essence management, wand recharging, node finding and storing, etc. All of it. Hated it. Every moment. I did not hate the Boots of the Traveller, repair on my grafter/scoop, or the WoET. I was willing to put up with a mod that I actively hated playing just to get those items. But now that I can scoop with Mekanism, graft with Gendustry, move quickly with Blood Magic or other mods, get step assist from Mekanism, and Exchange with EnderTech, I can put all that behind me and so can all my fellow "stuff" Thaumcraft users who dislike magic in general or TC in particular.

Experience Thaumcraft players love the mod, the mechanics, the looks. Everything about it. Thaumcraft is an awesome mod for people who enjoy the experience. Even though *I* don't enjoy it, I recognize that many players do. And they should, because the mod is very well designed, has excellent in game documentation, is beautiful to look at, and meshes nicely with other magic mods. It's just not for me.

Aesthetically, Thaumcraft is still one of my favourite mods. I love the way it feels and functions. I need to try out one of the slightly newer versions soon-the main thing that put me off was the Guardian spawns. I'd like to see warp rebalanced so that permanent warp is much less, and temporary warp is more significant but can be removed as a result of the bath salts or through killing the guardians. From what I've seen from a quick glance through the changelogs, Azanor has moved it more in that direction, but it's a question of whether it's enough to satisfy me. On my last world it got to the point where I was using cofh/killall every time they spawned because I was not in the mood to fight 5 at a time every 15-20 mins

Honestly, I'm looking forward to the newer updates of the mod. Sure, warp is annoying, but I've gotten used to it. I'm just looking forward to the kind person who makes an add-on mod about dealing and negating the freaking junk.
And about other things pretty much having what thaumcraft had but in a techy fashion? Oh well, it's like every tech mod, they go about things very similarly but take things in a completely different manner. Wand of Equal trade in another mod? Sweet, but I'll stick to Thaumcraft to be frank. I'm looking forward to new mechanics and I think they are pretty cool. The new elderitched stuff looks pretty rad (and the crimson cult folk look pretty sweet as well).
Personally I'd like to see a tech mod that'd go in the direction that Thaumcraft went; requiring you to research ancient tech or theories to make new things. And some things might be beyond the average Stevian's knowledge. Venture too far, and you may just become the next Tesla building the death ray... You'd see things not there, and all of that fun stuff.

So apparently I'm a "stuff" and "experience" person.
  1. My game isn't hard enough; creepers and zombies are no threat with most mod armors anyway. I need tougher enemies to fight and a more challenging experience overall.
  2. Thaumcraft is now moving even more into a middle- to end-game direction with more powerful armor and weapons etc. Plus all the items are very cool.
