I reciently statrted a new world with the monster pack (Latest 1.6.4) and I found an excellent site for my base, its a BoP Craig biome boarding a Magic forest, however on the edges of the forest there were three small areas of taint. Now I have played the game for about 5 minecraft days and I have been watching the taint areas, and they have been growing and two of the areas have merged into one big one and the other one is currently eating a greatwood tree (The one with cobwebs in it, I have seen a few spiders around it at night).

Now, I have never used or played around with Thaumcraft before, the research system has always been daunting to me (I've seen the mini game of moving around the runes to open research and have never been able to get a grasp of it), however I would like to try to get rid of the taint using ingame methods without resorting to going into creative and destroying everything around it or creating a BC quarry and making a giant hole in the ground.

1. Is there any good guides for a total Thaumcraft newbie like me that can help me get statrted with it?
2. What items should I research to help fight the taint that is spreading?
3. Are there any good non Thaumcraft items I can use that can help with this situation?

Non thaumcraft: Rainbow Trees.
Digging a giant hole won't help. You need ethereal blooms or pure nodes.
Oh, and those saying that pure nodes only overwrite taint if it's in a silverwood tree, you're dead wrong. It's any pure node.

Wander around the tainted land with a thermometer for a while or goggles revealing you will find a tainted node DESTROY it and the taint will die off it is possible the node is underground so if you can't find it quarry at very least it will make a huge wall for the taint to climb at best it will kill the node destroying the taint source and then breaking it

You don't need a tainted node for taint to spread or generate.

Rly? Eh he could still be lucky and just have a tainted node :p

Well anyway use witchery it has a spell that makes any area into the biome of your choosing I would guess it has no special code for tainted land.

If not then go into creative and spam ethereal blooms in survival there to expensive

Do not spam ethereal blooms from creative, it is cheap/cheaty to do that. Be sure to scan the taint for access to ethereal bloom research and either
A. Make ethereal blooms
B. Spam silverwood saplings
C. Rainbow trees
All of these can clear up taint.

Failing that OP can always move, lol.

[shamelessselfplug]Not very modestly I will refer you to my tutorial series. That is also listed in Azanors thread on minecraft forum. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCZleGQiTyuDQg3-2W54mbENF4mGuuuD3
There is 26 short episodes so far focusing on thaumcraft research mostly although with some practical builds and tips as well like fully automated golem production or charcoal farm. [/shamelessselfplug]

As to your taint problem as mentioned before ethernal blum will stop it and cure it. Good thing about when it's done with one part you can move it. Also the greatwood tree has spider spawner underneath and some dungeon chest so it is good idea to dig it and see what is there.

There is one rapid way to get read of taint but it's not very enviroment friendly. Take a filler from Build Craft mark 64 by 64 area around taint and remove top layer of ground with "clear" seting. it will destroy taint but obviously will leave you with massive patch of flat land.

I suggest moving outside of range temporarily so you are ready to tackle the problem otherwise if taint is allowed to grow large it is really hard to contain and you will have really hard time.

When you do that, at the end of it, you're supposed to write [/shamelessselfplug].

Taint can generate without a Tainted Node. Plus, I've honestly never seen a tainted node. In fact, seen all BUT a tainted node in terms of fancy nodes. Hungry, Pure, Bright, Dark, Unstable, Sinister... All that's left is a Tainted node and I'll have seen 'em all.

Dark node creates eerie biome around it in radius of 8 blocks away.
That is the sinister node. Azanor changed the naming a bit with TC4. Otherwise you could end up with a bright dark node, which didn't make sense.[DOUBLEPOST=1402844216][/DOUBLEPOST]From the skcraft.com wiki
Node Propertys
Aura nodes have special propertys, they have special effects on how the node recharges and interacts.

SpecialityEffect
HungryAbsorbs nearby items/blocks
PureTurns nearby area into a magical forest biome
UnstableChanges its aspects at random. Gives extra Perdito research points regardless of contents.
SinisterTurns nearby area into a Eerie biome. Spawns Hungry Zombies at random.
All nodes also have a brightness level. It determines the rate at which the node recharges its contained aspects when they are drained.

Brightness LevelNode Recharge Rate
NormalNormal
Pale1/6 of Normal
Bright6x Normal
FadingNone
Hungry
CAUTION: Hungry nodes suck nearby players and kill them, while also destroying items dropped.

A hungry is a special node that — other than generating randomly — can also form when any node is drained completely of it's vis.

Hungry nodes act quite similarly to a black hole, as in they pull all matter such as blocks and entities nearby into them, though not with enough intensity to prevent light itself from escaping. Once something is pulled through a hungry node, the object disintegrates into the aspects it is comprised of, and those aspects are added to the reservoir of the node.

For blocks, this process is instantaneous, however, when entities are sucked towards a hungry node, they simply take damage. If an entity doesn't die quickly enough from the damaging hungry node, it is flung high into the sky, in hopes that gravity kills them.

I guess dark nodes no longer exist in tc4.
