Thaumcraft 4 - Research troubles

Now first off, I know how to research and the mechanics behind it, but I am having troubles connecting the dots with a few.

Specifically my Iron Transmutation research. I've had a look at the cheat sheet and it says there's only 2 aspects used in researching it, Metallum and Permutatio. But after using these two I can't seem to position the runes correctly, and presumably there's no other runes that I can activate to help. Is there a way I can reposition these to make this work?

you probably haven't heard yet that you may sometimes come across research that's just unsolvable, no matter how many aspects you activate and move around.
just ditch those research papers and make a new one. for the harder research I actually recommend making a few research papers and picking out the best one to solve

quick tip, if a research already seems hard to solve, ditch it right away as otherwise you would only be wasting aspects.

Yeah, you need 7 lit symbols, but only have 6.

Indeed, I found several ones that I couldn't complete. I then started getting in the habit of mentally calculating how many symbols it would take to complete a research sheet. That, in turn, saved me several research points and even ink when I figured out some research sheets didn't even need all available aspects lit up.

Thaumium Golems, for instance, have 5 aspects available, but the particular pattern I lucked out on required just 3 aspects worth of symbols to be lit up.

haha, it got so worse with me that I would spend a good 2-3 minutes looking at a research what the shortest route was. sometimes it took so long because the damn starting point just had to be right in the friggin middle
