Get a thaumanomicon (Same as you did in v4)
Get a research table
have some paper and scribing tools in your inventory
Open up thaumanomicon and click on the research you want to do to get the research note
put it in the research table
Now the research mini-game
You need to connect all the aspects that the note begins with in a chain. How you do that is any aspect that is a component of another one connect together.
I.e. Aer connects to lux, because aer was used in making lux. So that also means that lux connects to ignis, because that was the other aspect.
if you have a research note with question marks as part of the initial set that you need to connect, that means that you haven't yet discovered that aspect and you need to go out and scan more things or combine more aspects to discover the compound aspect.

So then what would Order connect with? Research Expertise is the one I'm researching now, I'm coming back home after a journey of filling my wand and inspecting.
Order connects to anything that it can make. The idea is chose the one which you can then use to add another aspect in the chain which will get you closer to the other aspect required.
So for instance if I had Order - gap - water, I wouldn't go and use potentia in that spot, because it doesn't connect to water and order.

Yep, the 4.1 system can be really confusing at first. It gets easier once you learn what aspects make up what.
Oh, and in case you haven't noticed yet, by mousing over an aspect in the left-hand side of the research table, you see what it's made up of. It really helps.
Once you acquire the research for this. Until then, it's memory, guessing, or looking it up.
It's a research thing? I had half the Thaumonomicon unlocked by the time I updated to 4.1.
