DocM made a Charm of Keeping farm in his Mindcrack series. I can't get a Soul Shard to pick up TF Slime souls though, so I assumed he'd used a Slime spawner and relied on a mechanic that would cause it to spawn Twilight Forest slimes in the TF. A regular T5 Slime spawner spawns regular slimes in the TF though. Any idea how he did it? I'm not sure if he shows the process in his series, I could go back and watch a bunch of episodes in the hope that he did but he does seem to do quite a bit off camera so that might not help. Does anyone know?

Well, the newest version of Soul Shards says that it now supports TF mobs, so I guess 1.5.2 is the way to go? I don't actually have Soul Shards in my server anymore, so I wouldn't know if it actually works...

EDIT: Oh, let's actually answer the question here. Doc used a turtle to hollow out a maze, leaving behind a bedrock box. He then made the whole box dark and had water streams around the edges, all leading to attack turtles. Slimes would spawn in the center and hop out to the water, where they would be carried to the turtles, all as long as Doc was AFKing there.

But he said he couldn't work out why he had to AFK there which implied to me that he had a T5 spawner in there.

He has a shifting floor in the maze, this way he gets maze slimes for the charms. And they only spawn if a player is nearby.
Since he had way more golden charms then he needed, he put a normal slime spawner there, because he needs the slime balls.
T5 spawner spawn monsters even if there is no player nearby, all you need is to put a chunk loader there. :')

He has to AFK there because mobs only spawn if a player loads the chunks. No EXCEPTIONS to this rule at all, not chunkloaders, not anchors, not turtles, not wolves. Just hardcoded into the minecraft game.

AFAIK it's not that they don't spawn, however mobs instantly despawn if the closest player is more than 128 blocks away.
However, if loaded by say an anchor, and no players are in that dimension, it will spawn mobs, as there is no player to be more than 128 blocks away!
This only applies to certain things though, namely those that force/spawn mobs,
Such as soul shards.

This also applies if nobody is online, but the area is chunk loaded
