At the very least you need to research Victus (Life) at the research table - the Thaumanomicon gives the recipe. Its also convenient to research death (Mortuus) thereafter as the recipe is a rather obvious corruption of life.

You'll also want motus as quick as possible (unsubtle hint: Aer + Ordo in the research table). It's used for anything instrumentum-y
Combine terra and aqua for victus, then victus and perdito for mortus, mortus and victus for spiritus then spiritus and ingnis for cognitio.
This should allow you to scan more stuff.
For further research points scan all the nodes.
Also deconstruction tables are lame untill you discover that crafting tables will yeild one research point per table. Random primals mind you.
