Hello folks!

I've been voluntold to the task of administrating the modded Minecraft server for our University's video game club. Mainly because the last guy graduated 3 years ago and finally pulled the plug. We've got the world files and such, just nothing to run it on!

I'm hoping some more knowledgeable folks can share some tips. I've been given a budget of $500 CAD tax-in. Which due to the club funding of our University is non-negotiable.

I've obviously attempted to google a guideline. But most of the documentation I find is based on things that aren't topical. Like vanilla/virtual servers. Also, with hardware being such a moving target when a budget is in mind anything >2 years old is right out the window. So here I am!

The server would have on average 6-10 players on it, with peaks having about 15 (maybe 20-25 if some event is ran). We're running something very similar to Resonant Rise 3, with a few bells taken out and a few whistles put on in their place.

I'm not really sure where to start, I'd rather not misspend club funds, so I've decided to come pick your brains!

:D

Its sounds like you want to run the hardware yourself. If so, you need to have a place to put it that has power and and a suitable internet connection, probably at least 100mbps(you might be OK with a little less) both up and down. If you have that, you just need a machine. It doesn't have to be an actual server, a laptop or desktop will do also, provided that it is capable, specifically, you want one that has at least a dual core running at 3-4ghz with 4-10+GB or ram. Obviously, graphics don't matter since this will be run as a server. As far as actually finding something, you could look around your university for a surplus warehouse/shop. Also, craigslist would probably be helpful.

Otherwise, if you lack the space/internet like I do, you could rent a VPS or a small dedicated server. Note that if you get a dedicated, you wont have to share ip's or processor time with people running on the same box, though it will cost more. Alternatively, if you don't care about having control of the OS, you could opt for a multicraft server though, again, you'll be sharing ip's/ports and processor time with other people running out of the same machine.
