Ah. I'm assuming the starter node is the far left sid e? If so, you are using 1 too many symbols on your two left-most nodes. Try this:

1. Move your left-most symbol right exactly 1 space

2. Take one of the unlit symbols from the 2nd-to-bottom row and place that *exactly* in between your newly-moved symbol and the symbol on its right. This will intentionally block them from connecting.
EDIT : Don't need to do that since there are (still) 2 whitespaces between.

3. Move your now-free 2nd-from-the left symbol to the upper right.

If the starter node is *not* the far left one, The RNG gods did not smile on you. Throw it away, pray to the RNG gods, and try again.

Well, the starter node must the the left one, otherwise it wouldn't line up like that. It can only connect to one node.

Don't be hesitant about throwing away a bad-looking sheet and trying again. While Thaumcraft 4 proper has mostly tractable sheets, Thaumic Tinkerer seems to have a high percentage of intractable sheets. You will have to throw those away and try again.

Its entirely possible to find research sheets that are impossible to complete due to node placement and not enough runes to connect them. It's gotten slightly better since the initial release, but as MigukNamja said, Thaumic Tinkerer is notorious for having impossible research sheets. So it's good to learn to eyeball a sheet to see if the node placement is too outlandish to complete or not.

I think you can seperate the last two in the chain out one more space (move them to be two spaces apart)

It sort of looks like you can, but the lit symbols will only connect if they both fit in a 3x3 grid, i.e. have 0 or 1 space between them. In absolute distance terms, the distance must strictly be less than 2 (a 45 degree angle with a space of 1 has an absolute distance of sqrt(2), or 1.4-ish).

If you use Euclidean distance, that is. :)
The Chebyshev distance might be better in this case.

TC4 research uses Chebyshev distance of 0 or 1, correct.

And, I learned something new. I had no idea what to call that distance until today !

Chebyshev, Chebyshev, Chevyshev. If I say it enough times I'll remember it ;-)
