Strange spot on my map. What caused this?

I'm a bit behind on my mod features so if this is common knowledge I accept my foolishness. When I flew into the area it locked me in like a tractor beam and I took damage slowly. Managed to wiggle my way out.

It is a hungry node from thaumcraft. They 'eat' nearby blocks.
