Hi I am loving my return to minecraft through FTB, I am playing Direwolf20's modpack and following his lets play. I am not great at MC so I can't keep up with him but I am having trouble with keeping up with mining, every new episode he has a bunch of new ores and a lot of it! How does he get ore and diamonds so fast? Also getting buildcraft machines to work like a filler machine is challenging. So how much should I be mining and what do i do now in terms of making my world the best it can be?

Thanks in advance

Mine as much as you can. Also, Dire has tons of materials because the first thing he goes for is a quarry, then he made that world eater. :p. but yeah, before he gets a quarry, he does A LOT of mining off camera.

Yeah I'll go on more mining trips, any useful things I can look into to help me understand FTB more?
You can always go on googling sprees, which even the most advanced players do. Also, feel free to ask questions either by posting threads on here or you can shoot me PMs with your questions, which I will answer to the best of my ability. You'll find however that the best way of learning FTB is by watching the videos. And Dire isn't the only guy who helps new players. :)

I'd suggest specifically learning how to use Tinkers' Construct. Watch Dire's spotlight, read the wiki, read the books it gives you in-game, etc. Make you some good starter tools, and as soon as you have the resources, upgrade to a tool forge so that you can make you a hammer. Then you can go pounding out 3x3 caves with ease down under level 15 where the diamonds are. You'll start getting items faster than you know what to do with, even with a lower-quality hammer. I'd probably also recommend an excavator just to get rid of all that dirt and gravel along the way.
