Greetings,

On my server I made a StevesCart treefarm with a reinforced hull and tree cutter. I've had the farm up for about four days and within those four days, my cart has disappeared twice. I was wondering if anyone knows what happened to it?

Thanks

It might be the same thing that happens with turtles sometimes on servers. If the server is restarted or crashes while the turtle is moving, then it can somehow "miss" saving the turtle. I don't know if this is how it works, but I imagine that when the world is saved it "scans" through blocks and writes their detail to the disc. But if the turtle then moves from the not scanned to the already scanned just as the save is happening, the turtle end up not existing in the save.

Presumably that can also cause duplication if it happens the other way around, but I've nevet seen that reported.
Hmm thats true. But as I said, I don't even know if that is how it happens. But things that are moving during server restarts have a tendency to go missing.

It does kind of make sense - if all entities have a unique identifier then they could be flagged as having been saved so they don't get saved twice. If it's a vanilla mechanic then I suppose it could happen to minecarts, animals, even players although they may be handled independently and a little more robustly! It's probably a chunk boundary thing, so if you keep your cart loops small then it might never be a problem. 16x16 is only a little on the small side.

I has this happen in Unleashed. Evidently when the area with the cart is reloaded if the cart loads before the terrain there is a chance the cart can fall into the void.

I am pretty sure the world is loaded before any entities in it. How they graphically load on your screen is a whole different matter.

I've had this happen twice on a SSP map with the Direwolf20 mod pack. Same deal, reinforced hull tree cutter. I think it happened mid session once in a permanently loaded base area. Suspect it might be a rare interaction of the cart entering a block during a tree growth.

Well I have my server set to restart every 3 days so that is probably the reason

Just reaffirms me in my preference in forestry/MFR farms. I like Steve Carts its a fun mod. But wouldn't rely on it for anything steady.
Yeah. If I ever made another SC tree farm, I'd definitely use NEI to save a duplicate of the cart in case it mysteriously vanishes through no fault of my own. I had my cart vanish three or four times in my 1.4.7 world, I rolled back to a daily back-up each time which was annoying as I kept forgetting what else I'd done that needed re-doing.
