Now, this is all things considered a fantastic mod. I don't intend to slight it.

However, does anyone actually get a sense of satisfaction from using it to automate something? When I use SFM I do so pretty much thinking that I have given up a real attempt at automation.

The way I think of it, you have to have a goal in mind. Not just the specific purpose of the factory, but keeping it out of the player's way, or to an aesthetic style, a specific feature for convenience, or doing so with as little 'code' as possible. Automation gets pretty boring if you only ever focus on basic functionality.

SFM is a pretty cool mod, but for me it falls into the same category as MFR, ComputerCraft & some of the XU blocks - they risk trivialising the game. I know exactly what you mean about lacking a sense of satisfaction - it's far too much of a magic block. So easy it's cheesy.

Both SFM and CC could be improved to a certain extent by (much) more expensive recipes and a requirement for some kind of power, IMHO.

I do not want to talk about ExU. Certainly not its Pink Generator. And all the other game breaking silliness it piggybacks with its more sensible content into supposedly "tech" packs.

Not to rank on ExU but I personally don't use the things in ExU I've determined in my own opinion as overpowered, while some of the stuff I consider overpowered I find fun I have decided Soul Fragments are a good way to keep them in the game but have a major sacrifice (I've made Soul Fragment Blocks and Circuits for Certain mods). However I personally do not use any of the ExU generators.

On the topic of Steve's Factory Manager, I feel the same way about this; It's not too satisfying but I like making its recipes harder so I would be using more than septuple over the materials I would normally need to automate whatever I'm doing the hard way. I like paying for Ease of use, yes It trivializes things but due to its cost I wont be using it for everything.

whenever I do a build, I aim to do it as compact and efficient as possible, and SFM let's me do just that exactly.
sure, there's mods like computercraft, but I'm not a coder and pretty much an idiot, but SFM is actually a mod that I can do.
I really like SFM, though I wouldn't mind some tweaks and edits such as Steve's Addons

Personally I've disabled most of the Xu generators (aka the silly/"fun" ones), and also all the 8x and 64x versions. If I was to use the generators, I want to deal with the logistics of dealing with a bank/room full of them, not a single magic block.
Likewise, the magical world interaction module has had a recipe change, much more expensive, and also the pipes have been changed.

With SFM, I've also made the core blocks much more expensive, requiring components that are not available until mid game, and if you want a lot of SFM stuff, you'll need some automation by other mean in place to gather the resources.

Both mods have great things, they just need to be slotted into the right parts of the tech trees in tech themed packs, which is down to the pack author to resolve.

I think people are mentioning that they'd for the sake of fun rather use something like Buildcraft to automate, something lower tech and clunkier so its not as accessible making you have to use your brain more.

I knew SFM wasnt my cup of tea from day one so Ive never installed or used it. Personally, I like when mods take up a lot of space, it gives me a reason to build spaces for them. Im not huge on automation anyway and when I do automate, I try to do it with style and not just efficiency. I want the automation to be visible in some way.
