So recently got back into playing modded minecraft / direwolf pack (and minecraft again). And I am still surprised no one is recommending charcoal for power generation in early - mid game, especially considering how fast oak grows and how many resources it gives you. I did not come up with everything my self though, I saw a video some years ago of someone using harvester, planter and I think steam dynamo or similar. I figured I take that for a spin.

I built one harvester, one planter, one sludge boiler (not really needed, but some of the blocks it creates can be used. I see mostly it creates clay and sand, wondering if I could use the sand + Pulverizer to create niter for a TNT farm). I set the planter and harvester up with emerald upgrades. Next I got 2 redstone furnaces, 4 steam turbines (MFR), 1 steam boiler (MFR) and 5 aqueous accumulators (think you only need 4, but I had one spare). Brought an energy cell with about 1 million RF saved up, or maybe 100k, to start it up.

If above setup is too expensive for you, you can replace the boiler with steam dynamo or basically anything coal driven. Only thing you have to remember is that you will require RF to run. Boiler setup can be a bit costly with all those high temp fluiducts (however, I was starving for iron the most). It also does scale, so if you don't have emerald upgrade, add whatever you can and try to scale it to your wood production.

It generates plenty of powers, and excess wood as well (basically have 2 full iron chests, before it get voided). I think the above setup can easily manage 2 - 4 boilers with 4 steam turbines each, but you might need more water. If you add more at the start, I suggest you feed the boiler some coal to get it started, as during startup is the only time you need both redstone furnaces. I also tested it in creative with a Big Reactor steam turbine (basic), and it ran that on top of the 4 MFR turbines, so I havent really tested how many MFR turbines I can run on my current setup yet either. If I remember right, the problem was keeping up with water if I added too many turbines.

Next challenge was the other products, saplings and apples. I figured I could create fuel with them, so I set up a Squeezer, fermenter and refinery, but due to low apple production, this couldn't keep up with the sapling production. So I added in a BioReactor for the excess saplings. While not hugely efficient, I do manage to create some fuel, though I doubt it will be able to keep up with much. I find the Forestry stuff produce more than the bioreactor, even with low apple production. I also tried using ash and dirt, and burning peat, with auto workbench to create compost for the fermenter, but I found the mulch from squeezing the apples kept up with the fermenter and then some, so basically it was a waste of time and resources.

I also had to add in some redstone stuff to check full chests and the planter inventory (basically BC transport basic gate, and signalum servo, the latter is minimum for the itemducts, anything slower will clog up everything).

For power production, unless you have some giant RF drains, the above setup could keep up with most, and a single tree farm fully upgraded could probably run up to 4 boilers with turbines, or try to test with more aqueous accumulators and more turbines on single boiler.

Next I will have to figure out what to do with the excess wood. At the moment, I just pump it out a void pipe once the wood chest is full. If anyone has any creative ideas, I am all ears. I tried looking, but neither charcoal or oak wood is used for allot. Maybe I can use the planks for something, but I doubt it.

They used to recommend it back in the day before Big Reactors.
Big Reactors is almost early game when it's on default, at least for the shrewed. Mid game if the recipies are set to steel mode.
However I have found in expert mode Forestry boilers are making a comeback as the easier power gen has been gated to later on in the tech tree.
