So, after seeing the FTB mod pack, I naturally started a new survival world using it. During the course of my playthrough, I have noticed some very strange terrain generation. I am not certain what causes it, but it seems to be biome related.

In a nutshell, the glitch causes the world to generate what I call "Static Grasslands". These are large areas of varied width, and seemingly infinite length, where the land generates a static of grass block pillars. These pillars only seem to occur in bodies of Lava and Water, either above or under the ground, and the tips of the pillars stop at the surface of the surface of the lake/ocean/river.

Here are a few other things I noticed about them:
  • The generation stops when it reaches a normal area of land.
  • Passive and hostile mobs spawn normally.
  • Groups of sand pillars occasionally spawn close to normal land.
  • When looking at the F3 menu in these areas, the biome is almost always listed as a marsh.
  • Naturally generated features, such as trees, villages, tall grass, and sugar cane, spawn as they normally would.
  • The pillars end when they reach the bottom of the lake/ocean/river.
Here are a few screenshots that I took of the generation error:

View of the same area from Rei's Minimap. Notice the regular land and the NPC village.

Example of a underground lava lake inside the glitched area. The flowing lava you see was caused by me, not the generation.

This is just something I felt was interesting and of need to be shared. I used the FTB Beta pack for 1.4.2, and the seed I used is -3805365943485890104.

If you have any ideas as to why this occurred, or any information you would like to share, please post it here.
