Hey,
I would like to get into playing this modpack but I have a major problem. I can't stand manual mining/caving. I've done it way too much over the years. It makes me sick. So, I'm asking for tips on how to start out without having to go caving, if that is possible. I don't really want to cheat, but if you can recommend me a reasonable startup resource pack, I might consider it. I have played Tekkit before, so I know a bit about some of the mods, but mostly I am a newbie.
Thank you in advance to everybody. I'm looking forward to your replies. :)

Spelunk just long enough to get iron, redstone, and some diamonds. build a mining turtle, and have it excavate things (be sure to place a chest behind it to drop stuff into). If i'm not mistaken, thats the fastest way to get away from spelunking.

For a quick checklist, you'll need the following items to get started with turtle mining:
7 Cobblestone (smelt them into Smoothstone)
6 Sand (smelt them into glass and make glasspanes)
1 Redstone
3 Logs (make a chest and 2 sticks out of it)
7 Iron Ore (smelt them into Iron Bars)
3 Diamonds (make a diamond pick)
So you'll have to go down to diamond level at least once, but after that you have the option to stay away from mining manually ever again.

10 iron bars, technically, as you'll need 3 for an iron pick that you'll need for redstone and diamond

So making a mining turtle is the only way? Hmm, not as exciting as I though it would be, but I'll go try it out. Probably going to cheat myself one and fuel it with charcoal. Thanks for the replies.

Don't forget about the stone you need to create a iron pickaxe... Oh and you forgot the wood to make sticks, a workbench and a wooden pickaxe ;)

Back on topic, I'm using the "tunnel" program of the mining turtles. Works pretty well and a 100 block long tunnel fills up the turtles inventory almost perfectly (unless it runs into many different kinds of ores).

I have the same problem Esc.

My question is: what do you do when the turtle is mining? I'm new to the whole modded Minecraft as well.

Well, you could do all sorts of things. You can go exploring above ground for rubber, wool, food etc. After you get a few resources, you can get an ore processing plant set up. Or you could try diving into ThaumCraft. There really are endless possibilities. If there is something slightly more specific you want to do, I may be able to go in depth a bit more.

I thought you didn't want to cheat? If you're cheating in charcoal you may as well set them to have no fuel usage.

Making an ore processing plant doesn't sound bad! Thanks!
