Specs that are needed to run a server?

Can anyone tell me an optimal set of specs to run a Mindcrack FTB server please? Thanks :D

Optimal? I believe you mean minimal.

Minimally (for one user), you'll want 512MB of RAM, a 2.0GHz process from recent times (last two to four years, and multicoring is not important but useful for keeping other things running), and 100MB of ROM/disk space I'd say.

That ramps up when you want to add more people, allow for your world to get bigger, and the like. Closer on the optimal rage, a 4.5GHz process from modern times, 8GB of RAM, and 10GB of ROM/SSD space with a dedicated 10Mb/10Mb internet connection for remote users.

So a 1.5 gig RAM should handle it pretty well? (I will have nothing running on the pc except the server btw)

Lol 512mb ram? Hell that's not even enough for regular minecraft, let alone ftb. You would probably reach that limit with just a simple furnace, macerator, compressor, and extractor setup :p[DOUBLEPOST=1362686959][/DOUBLEPOST]

How many people will be on it?

1.5GB of RAM should handle three people for most of the content you'll find in FTB unless people start going hog wild with excess chunk loaders, if everyone runs off to their own part of the world, and other things that'll cause the server to end up choked up with too much stuff needing to be loaded at the same time.

LOL:p :p I have no chunkloader or quarries atm and 6gb of ram isn't enough for me on my ssp world

Sir, is this your letter "L"? You appear to have left it above your post! Consider it safely returned.

I've played around with vanilla and FTB servers, and you can get away with using as little as 256MB for a vanilla server with one person (with a lowered server side view distance), and 512MB will be enough until you start moving around with a jetpack or other quick movement system in FTB.

But yes, 512MB is not a lot of memory, and if possible, it is best to go with 1GB of memory per active user (per slot is the easiest way to think of this), but for a minimal value, 512MB is where I'd call it.

How, exactly, does it fail to "keep up" with your SSP world? Also, are you running your SSP world directly through the MineCraft client, or are you running it using a dedicated server?

My server would be 'dedicated' so I guess it will work with a few people :) Thanks for the help guys!

A few people, and then only if you baby it. In reality, I can utilize 1.5GB of memory on a dedicated server by myself without hitting the end game given a few chunks being chunkloaded, and some exploration.

You should tell your users to be careful with loading new areas of the world too quickly, having too much chunkloaders going, and the like. And make sure that they can contact you when the server goes belly up (which it will, surely) and crashes so you can reload it.

Good luck!
