If you have a hole in your reactor casing, the explosion can only go straight through the hole, approximately like this:
6gHIS.png

Black = explosion-proof wall
Red = area affected by explosion

So don't put anything behind the hole.

You could do this:

Blue = cable
Purple = cable affected by explosion

Nice, that's a smart idea. I'm definitely going to test and experiment with nuclear reactors then. Can't you also surround the reactors with water to at least dim the explosion effects if it ever happened?

Thanks for all your help guys

Somewhere over the rainbow.
Yes you can. Like the pictures in the post above mine, you can control the blast. It takes 2 layers of reinforced stone or glass to stop the explosion. Hardened glass from TE also requires 2 layers. Just make a zig zag baffle where your cables come out and it will contain the blast. I use wireless redstone to turn the reactors on and off so I only have the power cable going through the wall. I used a single wall of reinforced stone around mine with a hallway around it to make the 2nd layer. If you use the reactor plans off of the IC2 Exp page on their forums, you shouldn't have to worry about explosions. You can also use Nuclear control to shut down your reactor as a certain temperature so it is totally safe.

I saw Direwolf20 had made some really nice Nuclear Reactors in his LP series with systems that were 100% fullproof and yet, he got some troubles with all his Nuclear Reactors, despite having redundant systems to shut them down, I think that even with an appropriate chunkloader, something can always happen, something in the way the chunks are loaded and unloaded, even with a chunkloader I guess... But anyways the new IC2Exp totally prevent anyone from trying to use a Nuclear Reactor, I really doubt I'll go that route anytime soon with all the machines that are needed now, you can't automate it anymore, solar panels are safer and you don't have to worry and check them every 10 minutes to make sure they are safe, guess I'll have to go that route for now...

I'm pretty sure IC2 nerfs water and obsidian so that they're not 100% nuke-proof. At least thats the way it was before Experimental.
Also if you're looking for sources of eu, check out RTGs from ic2
