ALso EVERY other version of FTB works on my computer (even horizons which I hear has a lot of conflicting errors)
Um, those are the only 2 place I'm aware of as well.
Try uninstalling Java, restarting your computer and reinstalling it.
Also EVERY other version of FTB works on my computer (even horizons which I hear has a lot of conflicting errors) so does this information help in any way?

It must be getting the flags from somewhere but unfortunately where from I have no clue.

@Eyamaz The java guru can you help with this.

I have found the source of the problem AND solved it! After days of heading banging and googling I have found this fantastic guide to Java variables that explained everything: http://www.itcsolutions.eu/2010/11/29/set-environment-variables-in-windows-7-for-java/

Turns out at some point Java had set my SYSTEM VARIABLES to have one called _JAVA_OPTION with the memory at only -Xmx521M. I changed the size of this variable to -Xmx4092M, restarted FTB and now it works like a charm :D If anyone else has a problem like this please like them this guide, it's a life saver :)
