Alright, I look to you intelligent people here using FTB for a fix for this issue I have been having for quite a while. Playing on a server run by a friend, currently played by only us two. Every time I login to the server, there is a 10-20 second sort of delay before the world 'kicks in'. This also happens on respawning, as well as on world teleports and changes (/tp nether end portalgun mystcraft etc). This is brutal with the growing number of available worlds and ways to port around in FTB.

Even more brutal is when the area is hostile. This is why its so bad: even though I lag or whatever the actual case may be, the world is still active. I can port and have a spider a few blocks away. Nothing appears to move for 10+ seconds... suddenly it 'kicks in' and I get assaulted by everything that apparently happened in that time AT ONCE. I get every sound cue at once, every attack at once, everything. Usually this means death, so I respawn, and it happens again, hopefully away from danger... And just to note. I also cannot interact with anything during this lag period, things such as workbenches, chests, and villager trades do not respond, chat works but nothing is printed, but any attempt to interact works after the world decides to kick in. I can fully move around however, adding to the mystery.

This is quite an annoyance. But here are a few things: This issue also existed in vanilla MC and has existed for quite a while, though not forever. Others have joined us on his server before, and no one has experienced such things. I can join other servers (in vanilla) with no issue. It seems to be isolated to me, and only in reference to his server...
And just for the few who cant understand but still wish to know; This happened/continues to happen in: Vanilla, FTB Beta, MindCrack, DW20. Currently using DW20 with no additions, but again FTB is not the issue...

I have looked for a solution for a LONG time. The only thing I have ever found was this thread http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1461783-fixing-lag-and-freezing-when-joining-a-mp-server/ however this has never worked for me, even across its multiple updates. If anyone, ANYONE, can provide any information to help me out... I know this isn't an FTB issue, but I just know that some of you here would know your way around better than others, and the issue is just so prevalent here in FTB now. Sorry for the wall-o-text. Thanks.

This is result of low download speed on your end on the server, or low upload speed by the server.

In essence, when you join a world, you download the data, and to my experience, the "initial join lag" as I would like to say is basically the client trying to download the data in queues, and will only "sync up" to the server when the queue is finished. There is no fix to this problem, but either:

1. Upgrade your internet to have a better download speed.
2. The server needs to upload its data at a faster rate.

I also have this problem on mainly overseas servers, so I kinna expect this to happen. And it doesn't really help for the fact that mods tend to burden the load on both download and upload part of the problem, the sheer amount of info that needs to be sent and received is just massive. This is kinna why it is less prominent on say, a vanilla server.
