I took the notion to get Minecraft up and running again. This new FTB Unleashed is the best yet.

I am puzzled by what's coming for my game and I'm not sure what direction I should be going.

There's two big smelting devices, as far as I can tell, that I might want to go for.

A smeltery from Tinkers and an Infernal Furnace from Thaumcraft.

Is one best? Can they both be used for additional benefit?

Previously when I played I used a macerator... should I have that in there somewhere too?

Thanks!

You'll need Tinkers' Construct's Smeltery if you want to make it's metallic tools since you have to cast them using molten liquid metals pour into casts.

And for Thaumcraft's Infernal Furnace, I'm not too sure about it but I'm sure someone well versed in it will fill it in for me. :p

To my understanding, the thaumcraft furnace is good for making meaty treats, but it's probably not worth the price. I'd go with the TiC one.

You may also consider jumping on to a 1.6.x pack, if you're just starting out.

Ah... is there a pack similar in scope to Unleashed using 1.6.x?

Thank you!

Depends what you want to do, if you want a no hassle version of macerator/furnace I'd recommend going down the Thermal Expansion route.

If you're on Unleashed, you can get started quite cheap by just manually making some charcoal, and while that's running through the furnace make yourself a pulverizer (equivalent of macerator), an electric smelter (equivalent of electric furnace ((I can't quite remember if it was called electric furnace or redstone furnace)) )
Make 2 stirling engines (one for each machine until you can make redstone energy conduits, or jump straight in and make a conductive wooden pipe and conductive stone pipes) to power them (runs off coal/charcoal like a normal furnace, but produces Minecraft Joules - a form of electricity)

From there hook it all up, you can dump into the pulverizer and have it automatically send it to the adjacent furnace if they're touching. You can then place a chest next to the furnace and it can auto eject what it smelts straight into the chest.

This is the easiest form of automation and this can mass produce a lot of stuff since you don't need to baby sit it.

Again, it depends what you want to achieve in the long run.

There are MANY more smelting alternative than just the two multiblocks.

That being said, the smeltery is good because it's able to make metallic tools, process large amounts of metals, and it doubles ore quite efficently. Automating it is possible, but not exactly a simple matter (involving redstone, hoppers, and the like, it's not difficult, but, if you're not familiar, it could be tricky).

The Infernal furnace has a few things going for it, the first being that it doesn't need fuel. Plop the input in the top, and the output is spewed out the front, simple as. When you get to essentia, you can use ignis (i.e. from coal/charcoal) to speed it up. 1 ignis = 1 stack of quick smelting, and each piece of charcoal has 2 ignis. It doesn't double ores, but it does give extra nuggets of the metal/food. The amount of these is increased by adding bellows, until you are getting around 50% more (still not in the range of the smeltery). Where this comes into it's own is with the Pickaxe of the Core, which has a chance of dropping native clusters of ore, rather than the block. These act as pre-doubled in all furnace type things (including the smeltery, I believe), but, in the Infernal Furnace, they still give the nuggets, meaning that you can get 250% return.

The infernal furnace is also good for the final smelting step in many mods, if you put the dust from the macerator/ore washer/thermal centrifuge into it, then you get the ingots you'd expect, plus nuggets (does not work with straight dusts, as that's reversible from ingots, which would make a loop).

In my view, the infernal furnace does make a decent start, especially if you are wanting to explore the magical realms first.
