Smeltery - how to?

I have a few oreberry bushes, but I haven't set up a farm for them yet. I'll get around to that soon.
I've taken to disabling oreberry bushes. By the time one collects enough of them to provide a meaningful stream of resources, better options are available. They have a significant downside in that they can easily kill off a bat or zombie that wanders into them in a cave allowing another zombie to pick up the drop and never despawn.
I use them as a slow but steady supply of ingots. It only takes nine and AE lets me automatically craft them into ingots, so I'm not too worried about the time taken. But I do see the point about bats and zombies.
