Smeltery eating up my stuff

So I tested this several times before commenting here - and it seems to happen at random.

I throw a few stacks of something at the smeltery (so far tested with sand and aluminum ore), and I watch them go through the heating process, melt and disappear. I get nothing back in the form of molten metal or glass.

I just seen 2 Aluminum stacks disappear before my eyes, and I didn't get a single ingot out of it.

Am I missing something?

Are you "throwing" it in or placing it in the controller?

Controller. I tried manual placing, I tried hopper to the controller.

And just to avoid the trivial answers, I'm quite experienced at using the Smeltery, so I'm not doing some silly mistake. It's genuinely not working right.

I'll try breaking it up and replacing it from scratch just in case.

When did it stop working? Did you update mod versions? New pack? Are you on a server or SSP? Did that same smeltery setup work fine before?

I was once trying to craft a pick head and it was draining but the cast never filled.

It took me a while to realize I had a hopper below the casting table.

Silly mistakes can happen to non-newbies too

Looks like breaking it completely, and rebuilding it from scratch solved the issue.

Was really weird. Now I have to go look for aluminium all over again.

The one time that happened to me was back in 1.5, Unleashed pack. I made some buildcraft pipes and used a (thermal expansion?) insertion pipe into the smeltery. That didn't work out too well, lots of items just seemed to be gone. Not sure if you tried something similar, but that could be the cause.
